WINAQ is the first ever political party which gives indigenous Mayas of Guatemala representation in political matters in a country that they represent over 40% of the overall population. Rigoberta Menchú Tum  has been essential in the creation of the political party.  She ran for president of Guatemala under the WINAQ ticket in 2007 and 2011, creating  a revolutionary movement as the first women or Maya to have ever ran in a country with deep seeded sexist and racist views. WINAQ became the first official indigenous party in the history of Guatemala in 2011 with the win of two seats in the Congress.
